Cookie policy

This policy explains which cookies and similar technologies this website uses, what they are for, how long they last and how you can change your choice at any time. It complements our privacy policy, which explains how we handle personal data more generally.

A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device. Some cookies are needed for the site to work at all; others are only placed once you have given your permission.

Cookies we always use

These cookies are necessary for the website to function and are not optional. They store no information that identifies you personally and are never used for advertising.

Purpose

What it does

How long it lasts

Language (NEXT_LOCALE)

Remembers whether you are reading the site in English, French or Dutch.

Up to one year

Your cookie choice (yours_consent)

Records which services you have accepted or refused, so we do not ask again on every page.

180 days

Editor sign-in (payload-token)

Only placed if you sign in to the content management system behind this website, and only to keep that session open. A visitor who does not sign in never receives it.

Until the session ends

The public pages of this website place no session cookie of their own: nothing about your visit is held on our side from one page to the next.

Spam protection — Cloudflare Turnstile

Our forms are protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks that a form is submitted by a person and not by an automated script. Turnstile is loaded from challenges.cloudflare.com and places its own cookies (such as __cf_bm) on that Cloudflare domain — not on this website's domain. They are therefore not ours to read or to delete; Cloudflare's own privacy documentation describes them.

Always loaded, but without cookies: Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager loads on every page of this website and is not optional, because it is the container through which every measurement tag on the site is managed. It places no cookies of its own and collects nothing by itself.

It starts with Google's consent mode set to "denied" for every purpose. The tags inside the container — Google Analytics below, and anything added to it later — therefore stay inactive until you give your permission, and only the permission you give releases them.

Cookies we use only with your permission

Statistics — Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used: which pages are read, how visitors arrive and where they leave. It is released by Google Tag Manager only once you accept the "Statistics" service; until then no measurement takes place.

Cookies used: _ga, _ga_* (up to two years) and _gid (24 hours). These cookies are set by Google. More information is available in Google's own privacy documentation.

Embedded content — YouTube

Some articles contain a video. We never load a video player until you ask for it: an embedded video appears as a placeholder with a short notice, and only when you accept it is the player loaded — through youtube-nocookie.com, the privacy-enhanced domain, which does not store viewing data in a cookie for personalised advertising. Once the player is loaded, YouTube places its own cookies on your device: VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE and VISITOR_PRIVACY_METADATA (up to six months) and YSC (until you close your browser). They are set by YouTube on its own domain, not by this website.

Changing your choice

You can change or withdraw your choice at any time through Cookie settings at the bottom of every page. Refusing a service deletes the cookies that belong to it and that this website is able to reach; cookies placed by Google, YouTube or Cloudflare on their own domains can only be removed through your browser. How to do that differs per browser and is described in its help pages.

Changes to this policy

We update this policy whenever the services the site loads change. The version on this page is always the current one.
